The World Won’t End Until Jesus Comes

We hear many doomsday-style predictions. Some of these things are based on lies, while others are based on real concerns people have. Regardless, many people become fearful over such things. Yet, whether it is natural disasters, pandemics, war, or anything else that might cause you to fear, you can be comforted in knowing that this world will not end until Jesus comes again!

            1) God is faithful. Before we can find any comfort in God’s promises, we must recognize that God is always true to His word! For, if God is capable of lying or misleading, nothing He says can be counted on as absolute truth. Yet, the phrase “God is faithful” is used in Scripture to assure us that God is 100% trustworthy (1 Corinthians 1:9; 1 Corinthians 10:13). In fact, the Bible goes as far as saying God “cannot lie” (Titus 1:2) and that it is “impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18). For, God is completely separate from everything that is evil and devoted to everything that is good (1 John 1:5). He can never say anything besides that which is true and right.

            2) God has named the event that will end this world. The fact that God is trustworthy is significant because it is God’s word that created and upholds this world – and it will be God’s word that will bring destruction on it. 2 Peter 3:5-7 says, “They deliberately overlook this: By the word of God the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was brought about from water and through water. Through these the world of that time perished when it was flooded. By the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.”

It is the word of God that will determine everything about this world’s future. And, He has told us that the world will be destroyed when Jesus comes again. 2 Peter 3:10 goes on to say, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed.” Notice that God has said it will be “on that day” Jesus returns from Heaven in the clouds; not before! However, Jesus told us that no one knows the “day or hour” of Jesus’s return – “except the Father alone” (Matthew 24:36).

            3) Don’t be distracted while you wait for this Day. You must remember that no one on this earth knows when this earth will end. Therefore, do not become fearful when things happen on this earth that bring about doomsday predictions and thoughts. Instead of worrying and being fearful about your earthly life, you must remember that Jesus could come any day and prepare your soul! Jesus said, “This is why you are also to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44).

Listen to what Peter wrote concerning this Day and how people ought to be preparing and waiting for it in 2 Peter 3:11-14. “Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness as you wait for the day of God and hasten its coming. Because of that day, the heavens will be dissolved with fire and the elements will melt with heat. But based on his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found without spot or blemish in his sight, at peace.”

Regardless of your fears or what anyone else says, you can know for certain that this world will not end until Jesus comes! Nothing will destroy this world and end life on it until Jesus descends from Heaven in the clouds and we are all brought into Judgment. Then (and only then) will this world and the universe be consumed with fire so as to be destroyed. But, rather than living in fear of the future destruction of this world, we should be preparing for the Day when Jesus will judge us and we will either go into eternal life in Heaven or eternal punishment in Hell (Matthew 25:31-46)!
